Luna Joins Province in Biosphere Reserve Milestone

Mayor Januario S. Garde and MENRO Daniel Jose Viernes represented the municipality of Luna as Apayao marks the 2nd year of being a UNESCO recognized Biosphere Reserve.
To commemorate the event and to further cement its growing global reputation of being a home for the Philippine Eagle and thousands of bio-diverse flora and fauna, the Provincial Government of Apayao in partnership with UNESCO Philippine National Commission, the Philippine Eagle Foundation and DENR, established the yApayao Biosphere Reserve Research Center.
Governor Elias Bulut Jr. expressed his hope that the research center shall be utilized to its full potential as a home for environment researchers and scientists. The idea was complemented by Congresswoman Eleanor Bulut-Begtang, saying that the late EKB wished for an extension program by the ASC focused on Forestry to be established in Eva Garden, Calanasan to which the research center could be a perfect academic and scientific partner.
The blessing and ribbon-cutting of the said Biosphere Reserve Research Center was attended by all municipalities represented either by their local chief executives or their representatives. They were joined by the Provincial Officials and department heads.
The short but meaningful program was graced by visitors from the UNESCO Philippine Commission, the Philippine Eagle Foundation, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The research center and all that it stands for was encapsulated by these words from the director of the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Dennis Joseph Salvador:
“It is HOPE made permanent.”
Indeed, by working together and by aligning local policies and programs with national and global goals to sustain and further improve the biosphere, these small steps shall go a long way towards making a humble province like Apayao into a global icon that shows progress doesn’t need to be at the expense of our environment; that hope for a future where environmental protection and preservation is not a fleeting and ephemeral exception but the norm.
